Untouched landscape of the Franche-Comté

The Franche-Comté stretches between the Rhone and the Rhine over 4 Departments: with 2 mountain ranges bordering on it, the region is one of contrasts, punctuated by stretches on forests and sculpted by its rivers. The Franche-Comté is dedicated to preserving this natural wealth, though urban centres are never far away and is ready to share it with the visitors. Mountains, rivers and forest constitute this magnificent surroundings which the Franc-comtois people welcome you to come and visit and relax in.

In the heart of Europe

The Franche-Comté occupies a strategic position at the centre of Europe, and is thus a sort of 'meeting of the roads' or crossroads. Despite the mountain ranges and forests which shape the region it remains easily accessible sharing borders as it does with Switzerland along more than 230 kms.

Surrounded by massifs

It is principally its mountain ranges - the Jura mountain range and the Vosges massifs - which shape the Franche-Comté. These mountains – a particularity richly endowed natural resource – have also to some extent shaped the life of the Franc-Comtois and great care is taken to preserve them.

A green region

44% of the Franche-comté region is covered in trees, making it the most densely wooded area in France. These forests are a distinctive feature of the landscape and influence the lives of the inhabitants in terms of tradition and the economy.

Natural sources of water abound in Franche-Comté and we can count 3350 kms. of water-courses and no less than 80 lakes and 1000 ponds. The exceptional purity and energy of this water fascinate and reflect its power.
